Yet nearly 30% of adults in the US experience insomnia. Insomnia may be experience as difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, waking up too early, or all of the above. How to treat insomnia

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I for short) is an evidence based psychotherapy that helps target both thoughts and behaviors that maybe influencing poor sleep patterns. Insomnia is a common complaint that is often first talked about with a primary care provider. Primary care providers often refer clients to me for this highly specialized treatment prior to starting a sleep medication.

Indeed, the research suggests that the safest and most effective first line treatment in combating insomnia is CBT-I. By completing a course of CBT-I, I help individuals develop sustaining skills to overcome their sleepless nights.

When is medication indicated?

Sleep medication may be indicated to combat short-term insomnia. Additionally, chronic insomnia may be due to other biological or psychological factors. As part of your care, I start by conducting a comprehensive biopsychosocial evaluation to hone in on all contributing factors that may be affecting your sleep. In the case there may be other concerns, and medication is indicated, I will partner with you to find the safest and most effective medication option while continuing to work with you on gaining skills to achieve restoration and balance.
