About Restorative Psychiatry in San Francisco

Greg Roussett, NP, PhD

Our Approach to Psychiatry and Wellness

At Restorative Psychiatry, we believe that healing begins with truly understanding your story. Led by Greg Roussett, NP, PhD, a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner, our practice combines the scientific expertise of psychiatry with the compassionate, holistic perspective of nursing. This balanced approach allows us to care for the whole person — not just the symptoms.

With nearing a decade tenure at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, I provided psychiatry and psychotherapy services with a multidisciplinary team. While at the VA, I achieved national certification as an insomnia specialist. Along with a colleague, I implemented an insomnia program where I helped hundreds of clients gain control over their sleepless nights.

Additionally, I was a National Institute of Health (NIH) funded sleep researcher at UCSF, where I investigated health outcomes of individuals who experienced sleep disturbances.

Kumar Vedantham MD - Collaborating physician

My interest in psychiatry developed early in life. My parents say I wanted to be a doctor at five—likely a mix of truth, fiction, and parental persuasion. I grew up in India and moved from Chennai to New Jersey at age 11, an experience that shaped my perspective on people, culture, and mental health.

I was accepted into Brown University’s Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME), a combined undergraduate–medical school program. There, I became deeply interested in the mind and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Cognitive Science.

I entered medical school convinced that psychiatry would not be scientific or rigorous enough to be intellectually satisfying. That view changed quickly once I rotated through the field. I was drawn to psychiatry’s depth, complexity, and its integration of neuroscience, psychology, and clinical medicine.

After medical school, I moved to California to complete my psychiatry residency at UCSF. During residency, I began working with veterans at the San Francisco VA Medical Center. Their experiences sparked a strong interest in trauma and how it affects the brain. I briefly explored PTSD-related immunology research, but realized that my strengths lie in direct clinical work with patients.

Major depressive disorder
ADHD

I view treatment as a collaborative process and work closely with other therapists when appropriate to provide integrated care. I am particularly comfortable working with individuals who feel uncertain or hesitant about starting medication, and I take time to ensure treatment decisions feel thoughtful and well-informed.
